Paul Sims – Minister of Music and Worship
Paul Sims is on his second tour of duty with First Baptist Corbin, having served previously from 1983-2000. He spent the next twelve years as a North Carolinian, serving the First Baptist Church of Monroe as Associate Minister for Music and Worship. Paul returned to Corbin in February of 2012. A graduate of Furman University and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he has been adjunct faculty at Wingate University in North Carolina and at University of the Cumberlands and Union College in Kentucky. He is on the Coordinating Council for CBF Kentucky, and is co-director of Festival-by-the-Sea in Charleston, SC. In 2014, he served on the planning team for the Montreat Conferences on Worship and Music.
Paul has two ministry passions: the planning and leading of worship, and advocating for social justice. A lover of good food and good books, he is not, however, a fan of biographical paragraphs that try for cleverness (though the last sentence is a feeble attempt).
OUR PREACHERS IN THE INTERIM
Jefferson, Cari, and their four children: Carson, Quincy, Whitley, and Lincoln, have attended FBC Corbin since moving to Corbin in 2015. This was a bit of a homecoming, since Jefferson's roots are in Corbin. His extended family has called Corbin home for several generations. Jefferson teaches at the University of the Cumberlands and Cari works at the Corbin School of Innovation. Their children are involved in band, karate, swimming and drama, and cross-country. Jefferson graduated from Southern Seminary with both a M.Div and a Ph.D. and was ordained on Trinity Sunday by Cari's home church. He has served in a variety of ministry roles: as a youth minister, a worship leader, and a pastor for a new church.
Phil is a native of Corbin who graduated from Corbin High School in 1970. He received his bachelor's degree from University of the Cumberlands and completed his Master of Divinity degree at Southwestern Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas. He received his Doctor of Ministry degree from Southern Seminary in 1991. Phil has been pastor of three Kentucky churches, taught at Clear Creek Baptist Bible College and as an adjunct professor in the religion department of Eastern Kentucky University. He often serves as pulpit supply in Presbyterian churches and has been the interim at both Corbin Presbyterian and First Presbyterian of Middlesboro, where he served for eight years, beginning in 2012, as their bi-vocational pastor. He also served First Baptist as interim in 1995. He is best known as the husband of Gayle Majors, who is organist at FBC.
Alice has been a member of FBC since moving to Corbin in 2008. Her relationship with FBC began in 2005 when she and her husband Todd were married at the church. Alice is a graduate of McAfee School of Theology (MDiv) and has served as a healthcare chaplain for the past 13 years. In 2010, Alice was ordained for ministry by FBC Corbin. She loves being outdoors, reading mystery novels, and having impromptu dance parties with her family. Alice and Todd are parents to two boys, Lucas and Alex, and a goldendoodle named Rocket.
