Austin Carty—Senior Pastor
Austin Carty became senior pastor of First Baptist Corbin in June of 2015. A writer and high school English teacher prior to entering the ministry, Austin holds degrees in literature and divinity from High Point University (B.A) and Wake Forest University (M.Div.), and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) at Emory University. He also holds a certificate in Faith-Based Non-Profit Leadership from Wake Forest University. The author of High Points and Lows: Life, Faith, and Figuring It All Out (Penguin, 2010), his writing has appeared in The Huffington Post, Sojourners, Relevant, Today’s Christian, and several other print and online publications.
A lover of theology and the arts, Austin is passionate about communicating the truth of the Christian story through the lens of contemporary culture. He drinks way too much coffee, geeks out on Fyodor Dostoevsky and CS Lewis, prefers Colbert over Fallon, and watches too much Netflix. He is married to April and together they have two young daughters, Ada and Julianna.
Paul Sims – Minister of Music and Worship
Paul Sims is on his second tour of duty with First Baptist Corbin, having served previously from 1983-2000. He spent the next twelve years as a North Carolinian, serving the First Baptist Church of Monroe as Associate Minister for Music and Worship. Paul returned to Corbin in February of 2012. A graduate of Furman University and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, he has been adjunct faculty at Wingate University in North Carolina and at University of the Cumberlands and Union College in Kentucky. He is on the Coordinating Council for CBF Kentucky, and is co-director of Festival-by-the-Sea in Charleston, SC. In 2014, he served on the planning team for the Montreat Conferences on Worship and Music.
Paul has two ministry passions: the planning and leading of worship, and advocating for social justice. A lover of good food and good books, he is not, however, a fan of biographical paragraphs that try for cleverness (though the last sentence is a feeble attempt).
